Structural Integration & Myofascial Massage: Improving Your Kinesthetic Awareness
Structural Integration and myofasical release (also known as myofascial massage) is a form of bodywork that takes a global approach at reorganizing the connective tissues that permeate your entire body. Every part of your body has a story, from your little toe to the tip of your nose, and we tend to forget, through childhood traumas, accidents, or busy lifestyles, how those parts of us can correlate to today’s discomfort or pain. Myofascial release hopes to reintroduce you to whats going on in your body, through a therapeutic and scientific approach. It hopes to open joints that are compressed, close joints that are under unnecessary tension, and restore homeostasis in your nervous system. Eastern in its roots, and western in its approach, Structural Integration and myofascial release draws upon the practice of acupressure and shiatsu to help your body become more well-circulated; so your nerves can slide, blood vessels can flow, joints can articulate, lymph can flush out, and muscles can receive oxygen.
Rob uses a systematic approach to myofascial release and myofascial massage to help peel back the layers that are causing restrictions or irregular movement patterns in peoples’ bodies. Using acupressure, shiatsu, pressure points, joint mobilization, physical therapy and chiropractic techniques, Rob blends what he thinks will work best to better align your body. Unique in its approach, structural integration and myofascial release takes into account the big picture- you and your relationship with your body. Like any sort of journey, SI will take you where you need to go, and shine light on parts of yourself unexplored. The work is effective, invigorating, and liberating. 60, 75, or 90-minutes long, sessions include before and after photos (only if helpful to the client), biomechanical joint assessments, and insight into where your body is gripping and not feeling at ease.
This work realigns, releases and rebalances the body, thereby restoring flexibility, revitalizing your energy, and leaving you feeling more comfortable in your own skin. Sessions are usually done in a 12-Series format focusing on both short and long fascial chains, intrinsic and extrinsic muscle groups, both deep and superficial muscles in the body. The therapy works to ‘unglue’ stuck parts of your body (joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons), as well as improve your kinesthetic literacy.
SI can accomplish the following in your body:
- Pain relief and chronic stress reduction
- Promotes a deeper connection to breathing
- Alleviating acute and chronic pain, soreness and tension
- Improve alignment, balance, coordination and posture
- Increase muscle function and joint movement
- Restore a more regular circulation to your lymphatic system
- Reduces inflammation of the central nervous system
- Enhancing nervous system activation and response
- Release tensions and resolve discomfort
- Promotes body, breath, movement and spatial awareness
- Supporting muscular efficiency and energy conservation
In short, SI allows your body to naturally regain the integrity of its form, thus enhancing freedom of movement and postural efficiency. Perfect for athletes, business professionals, children, dancers, or anyone who needs to ease chronic pain and improve their physical comfort.
More About Structural Integration & Myofascial Release
If you’re new to SI work I suggest taking advantage of my 3-session package, designed to expand on the benefits of myofascial release and body work. Sessions include a biomechanical assessment of how a joint moves, as well as 1-3 corrective movements to practice at home each time we meet.
Focuses on your lower body. The work will involve rebalancing your legs under your hips so that you feel a sense of core support from your feet. I’ll do my best to give you a sense of lightness in your feet and hips while educating you on your legs and how to use them.
We’ll work on opening your breath via the ribcage, shoulders, and abdominals. Together we will try to bring about a balance between your shoulder girdle and ribcage so that you feel a more natural ‘living’ breath throughout your torso. We will finish with some movements to bring about ease to your head and neck.
This is where we bring it all together by honing in on your spine. I’ll want to improve the relationship of both the pelvic cavity and abdominal cavity via the spine and start to bring your attention to your movements and postures. Goals include giving insight into your postural patterns and how you can teach yourself to move differently.
Your first-time assessment is free. This is where you and I meet and talk about who you are and what you want. From there, I’ll assess your current level of fitness, movement, and recommend a SI program tailored to meet your goals while accommodating your lifestyle.
